Greg Brockman has officially taken over OpenAI's product strategy — the most significant restructuring adjustment since Altman's "code red" announcement earlier this year. According to Wired, Brockman plans to merge ChatGPT with the coding tool Codex into a unified product, and consolidate the developer API into a core team. He said in an internal memo: "We are consolidating our product lines to maximize focus on the future of agentic AI, winning on both consumer and enterprise fronts." Previously, OpenAI had successively suspended side projects like Sora video generation and Science; CEO Altman's "code red" declaration from late last year is gradually materializing into specific action. Notably, Altman emphasized that the company needs to refocus on the core ChatGPT experience, rather than dispersing energy on side projects.

From a technical perspective, the logic of merging ChatGPT and Codex is clear: consumer-grade conversational capability and coding-agent capability are converging, and the underlying model is consistent but the interaction interfaces are separated with no need. This is more than a product-strategy adjustment; it reflects OpenAI's strategic focus in the agent-economy era — shifting from chatbots to real AI workflows. Whether this restructuring ultimately helps OpenAI win in the agent race will hinge on Brockman's execution.
