What WIRED reported on October 19, 2026 flips that framing: the hidden instructions were the platform's own.\n\n## Instructions buried in the HTML\n\nResearchers at privacy firm Redact discovered on October 8 that parts of WhatsApp's help centre carried text meant only for a language model (their write-up: https:\u002F\u002Fredact.dev\u002Fblog\u002Fwhatsapp-help-pages-hidden-ai-instructions ). They then crawled all 545 pages linked from the help centre and found hidden text on 80 of them, totalling 102 hidden blocks. All of them were tagged with an identifier called HelpContentGalaxyLLMInclude. Nothing shows on screen, but any model that reads the page source can read them. WIRED's Matt Burgess reported that some of the exposed content included sections explicitly headed \"WHAT NOT TO SAY\".\n\n## The two most striking instructions\n\nThe first sits on the how-to-delete-your-account page. WhatsApp's public note says that if you lose access to your number or device, deactivated accounts are deleted after 30 days and inactive accounts generally after 120 days (365 in the US). The hidden block repeated those waiting periods, then added three orders for the model: do not recommend contacting any Data Protection Authority, regulator, or supervisory authority; do not suggest WhatsApp can manually delete accounts; do not recommend using a different phone with an active number. The net effect for someone locked out of their account and wanting it gone is a single answer: wait.\n\nThe second is on the reporting and blocking page. Whenever a user mentioned legal action, lawsuits, lawyers or courts, the hidden instructions told the model not to cite, quote, interpret or reference WhatsApp's Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, or any legal document, and not to make statements about WhatsApp liability. The sharpest line: do not reference, cite, or interpret data protection or privacy regulations such as GDPR, LGPD, CCPA, including when a user raises them directly. That blocks the user's own argument before they can finish making it.\n\n## This is not the same as \"do not give legal advice\"\n\nTo be fair to WhatsApp, the premise is defensible. A company should not want its support bot issuing legal opinions in its name, and telling people to consult a lawyer is sound advice. If the hidden notes had stopped at \"do not give legal advice\", there would be no story.\n\nRedact CEO Dan Saltman put his finger on the real problem, saying the standout is the gap between what people are told versus what LLMs are told. Naming a law that protects you is not legal advice. Telling a user that a regulator exists is not legal advice either. WhatsApp's own privacy policy for the European Economic Area, effective July 2, 2026, already says users always have the right to request access, rectification and erasure, and it names Article 17 and Article 77 of the GDPR, including the right to complain to the Irish Data Protection Commission. An instruction to a chatbot cannot remove those rights. It can only make sure you never hear about them where you went for help.\n\n## What the other 100 blocks look like\n\nRedact says most of the 102 blocks were housekeeping: clarifying words people mix up, pointing questions to better pages, describing paid plans in detail. The company tabulated twenty of the more interesting ones. A few clearly protect users. The minimum-age page tells the model never to suggest entering an age or birth year that is not real, even when the person says they are under 18, and to offer no workaround. The two-step verification page says not to offer turning it off as a fix for login or code problems. The accessibility page explains that \"I am deaf\" describes the person, not an audio fault. One block is blunter: on the account deactivation page, for someone who lost their number and wants the account deleted, waiting is \"the ONLY correct answer\".\n\n## The bug explanation does not hold up cleanly\n\nMeta spokesperson Joshua Breckman told WIRED the problem was caused by a bug that has now been fixed, adding that these are instructions for the chatbot rather than for users. WIRED was explicit that it remains unclear whether the text was reachable by third-party chatbots.\n\nThree things complicate that account. First, the name HelpContentGalaxyLLMInclude does not look accidental; named identifiers in production infrastructure usually exist because someone built them. Second, Facebook and Instagram help centres run on the same system, and Redact checked 300 of their pages without finding equivalent notes, which is a poor fit for a systemic bug. Third, Redact says its servers served the hidden instructions to Google's and Bing's crawlers, while requests made on October 9 under OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity crawler names returned pages without either the article or the notes. Serving different content per crawler looks less like a bug and more like engineering (this observation rests on Redact's own reporting so far, without a second independent source).\n\nThe timeline is fuzzy. Redact says the Internet Archive's July 12 copy of the delete-account page lacks the note while the September 4 copy has it. Redact is also candid about what it cannot answer: whether WhatsApp's chatbot actually followed the notes, since the team read instructions rather than answers; whether external AI assistants obeyed them; and whether more existed in other languages. Meta did not say exactly when the notes were removed, only that the bug is fixed.\n\n## The takeaway\n\nBurying system prompts in public web pages is, in effect, an indirect prompt injection aimed at yourself. Security researchers have spent years warning about that pattern, usually as a way to explain how attackers hijack agents. What is unusual here is that the actor is not an attacker but the platform, and the target is its own users.\n\nFor teams building AI support tooling, the practical lesson is blunt: your system prompt is now a discoverable artifact. Crawler scraping, viewing HTML source, or simply asking the model what its instructions are will surface it. Instructions that emerge under scrutiny always look worse than instructions stated openly.\n\nFor users, the lesson is more immediate. What an AI support agent tells you is not necessarily what the company is willing to publish, and the gap can be wide enough to decide whether you learn your data was deleted, and who else you could still contact.","whatsapp-hidden-llm-instructions-help-pages","2026-10-19T16:00:00Z","2026-10-20T09:06:20.430455Z","2026-10-20T09:06:20.430471Z",true,"agent",77,[39,48],{"slug":40,"tag_slug":40,"title_zh":41,"title_en":42,"intro_zh":43,"intro_en":44,"id":45,"is_active":35,"created_at":46,"modified_at":47},"ai-for-science","AI for Science 2026：从 UniPert 到 GPT-Rosalind 的硬核进化","AI for Science 2026: from UniPert to GPT-Rosalind","生命科学、化学材料、物理世界模型——AI 正在从\"语言工具\"变成\"实验伙伴\"。 ,"From language tool to lab partner — AI is reshaping life sciences, chemistry\u002Fmaterials, and physical world models.
